Over three months later.... "Uplift" my Driftwood

Over three months later.... "Uplift" my Driftwood and Sand sculpture now living in my garden.

Many/most of the rings have opened up. My intention was to rebind them. However that has not happened yet and now I quite like the changing nature of the sculpture as it responds to the climatic conditions. It can be easily picked up and sits back on a new configuration.

A round basket starting with a double whiri (plait

A round basket starting with a double whiri (plait) from Jan van de Klundert' s book Te Kono Naku Raranga Harakeke (Sculpting in Flax).

It is a while since I have woven one of these and I am really pleased with how it turned out even if a little bigger than I had anticipated.

Some of the results from my recent paper marking session with harakeke.

1. Freeform using the last of the pulp and dried on the mould.

2. The side of a sheet which was exposed to the air when drying.

3. The side of a sheet which was against the tile.

My previous post showed how I dried the sheets on the bathroom tiles. Some sheets were couched onto interfacing felts while others were directly onto the tiles. It was much easier removing the ones on the felts.

I was recently clearing unwanted agapanthus from around some harakeke bushes and suddenly thought of making paper from them, something I hadn't done before. These sheets are my first effort.

The results of a long but very satisfying day making harakeke paper. - A4, A5 and in-between size sheets now drying on the bathroom tiles. This bathroom only gets used as such when we have guests. I used the take (butt ends) for the first time. Looking forward to seeing the dried sheets.

"Visitor from the Deep" - an 11m long driftwood log and beach stones
"Uplift" - a network of 70 varying sized hoops created from driftwood kareo - supplejack vines- tied with harakeke
