The winter members’ exhibition, The Sum of All Parts, was held at Left Bank Gallery in Greymouth from 22 May to 27 June 2026. In response to the theme, I created three multipart artworks that each explored how individual materials, forms, and connections can gather into a larger whole.
Artworks
Gathered
Gathered is a collection of fifteen seaweed forms presented on sheets of handmade harakeke paper. The seaweed was collected from the beach at Hokitika, while the harakeke came from my garden. The pieces can be purchased separately or as a single work.
Mutable
Mutable is made from twenty-eight woven harakeke pyramids linked with muka, or extracted harakeke fibre. Together, they form a flexible structure that can shift, realign, and continually change.
This work first appeared as Facets of Form in The Shape of Gathering, where it was suspended and allowed to rotate freely.
Orbs 1–3
Orbs 1–3 consists of three random-weave harakeke orbs displayed on a plinth. Each orb is shaped around open volume, allowing light and shadow to move through the structure. Variations in the harakeke give each piece its own presence. The works are available either as a set or individually.
Reflecting on the Installation
I had originally intended Gathered to be hung on a wall. Instead, Cassandra, the curator, placed the works horizontally on plinths alongside my other pieces. This created a concentrated hub of my work, setting it apart from the other wonderful works in the exhibition. Seen together, the individual works became more than separate pieces; they formed their own sum of parts, each material, form, and connection contributing to the whole.
